Cool Urban Home for Strips on Stripes

Look at the cool home my Strips on Stripes quilt now lives in.

When my daughter was visiting, last summer, this quilt was hot off the press and Jessica  quickly claimed it as her own, and that's just how I love it.

It looks right at home.

Strips on Stripes 2011.....an unexpected surprise.

There are so many beautiful quilts entered in this fall's Blogger's Quilt Festival over at Amy's Creative Side. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us, to share our work and celebrate each others creativity. Take the opportunity to enjoy....you won't be disappointed.

The quilt I would like to share with you has been.... a bit of an unexpected surprise for me. It started with a few fat quarters and me wanting to make a sample, for joining blocks, in a QAYG tutorial........I got a little carried away.

Also, there were quite a few Ticker Tape quilts, in the blog world, last January and I was trying to come up, with some way of avoiding, all those little pieces and all the stitching around each side. My first idea was strips...rather than little pieces. I then realized I preferred a cleaner finish....so I appliqued the strips to accomplish that.

I was rather surprised, by the lovely texture, in the finished quilt.

I wanted to join the quilted blocks, in a more random manner, to avoid the look of the typical QAYG grid.

Also, right around this time Chawne knit a blanket that blew my socks off......I know, I was still dreaming about this blanket, as I made this quilt.

What did I learn throughout this process.....keep experimenting with new ideas and realize inspiration comes, in many different forms.

The quilt now resides, in Montreal, with my twenty-eight year old daughter.....she was visiting, took one look... and you know the rest of the story....

You guessed it.....to Montreal with Jess and Jeff. It will be so hard to see them go tomorrow, at least a little of my love is going with them.

Love you guys.....this quilt should look right at home in your new, funky, loft-like apartment.

Fresh Sewing Day.....some finishes

How is it possible that another month has passed? It is once again Fresh Sewing Day at  Lily's Quilts. Lynne has come up with another fantastic idea.

Fairly productive, I would say.....I might not fair so well for the month of August. I'll be visiting with my kid's from Montreal and throwing in a move on the west coast. The plus side is, I will end up with a larger West Coast Studio than I had before....yay!!!!

A Little Show and Tell

Strips on Stripes Finished.....

 Where did it start? ........Where is it going?

I've been a asked, a number of times, what inspired this quilt. For me, inspiration is not always that straight forward. It started with a few fat quarters and me wanting to make a sample, for joining blocks, in a QAYG tutorial. I simply got carried away, but there were a few other things rattling around in my brain, at the time.

 The Ticker Tape thing was pretty prevalent in blog land last January and I was trying to come up with some way, of avoiding, all those little pieces and stitching around all four sides of each piece.....some laziness going on here. The first thing, that came to me, was strips....thus eliminating half the edges. I then realized, I was not all that fussy, for the raw edges, so I appliqued the strips, in order, to avoid that.

But, these were are just methods I was playing with.....part of the process, but not all that inspirational.

Right around this time  Chawne, gifted artist that she is,  knit a BLANKET.........it took my breath away. I wanted that type of texture and excitement in a quilt.......and I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, it was part of the inspiration for my quilt. Thanks Chawne, for letting me use this beautiful picture in my blog.

The interesting thing about inspiration is that it always leads to more inspiration.......

Strips on Circles  is the next quilt in this series....if you can actually call it a series.

Just a Little Bit Closer.....

Just a little bit closer....you're my kind quilt...and the night is so long......Oh dear, am I about to burst out in song, maybe not.

And that's it ......until the quilt is finished.

I'm Getting Closer and Closer

I almost gave into temptation to start something new, but then I thought......I'm getting closer and closer to finishing this one.....so I've decided to persevere.

Last Block Finished....Now What???

Yes, I finished the last block for Strips on Stripes this morning, but now what???

There they are, all on the floor....I'm missing my design wall back home.

I swear, at times like this I have no idea what I'm doing.....what is the best way to join these up?? Here I go making a huge mess, as I try to decide my next step.

 

A few layout possibilities.

 

Bring it to a different room for different lighting.

Audition a few fabrics for joining strips...who knows??? Sometimes the process is tedious other times things click into place immediately.....a little tedious today.
