Here is my finished quilt...... Dresden Gone Urban..... for Lily's Quilts QAL. I managed to take a few quick shots outside yesterday morning at 5:30 am before I headed out to the airport. For a little more info check out my guest post over at  Lily's Quilts

Finished

I thought I could, I thought I could and I did........ only to realize it's to dark to take any really good pictures now, and I'm leaving on a really early flight in the morning....off to the west coast and all my projects waiting there. If I get up really really early, I might just get a few good shots in, before I go.....then  again, not really a morning person.

An additional note: the missing chunk of grey fabric turned up the moment I added the black borders....what did I tell you.......I knew I had more of the much need grey (a number of meters more). I'm not crazy after all.  I think it was a happy accident, I'm quite happy with the dark borders and sashing.

Famous Last Words....I'll Just QUICKLY Finish this Quilt

Have you ever said.......I'll just quickly finish this quilt.  As far as I'm concerned that's just asking for trouble.  As soon as those words, come out of my mouth, things start to go wrong. Last Thursday, that was my plan, to quickly finish joining the squares for my quilt, for Lily's Quilts QAL......well, I didn't have quite as much grey fabric as I thought I did....the minute I finish I'm sure the huge piece, of missing fabric, will mysteriously surface out of nowhere.

I also decided the quilt needed some borders to balance the sashing....more grey fabric was needed. What did I do....changed direction of course. Here you see me adding some borders, using the QAYG method (notice they are not grey).

As you can see, the squares are almost joined...but all that time, fooling around with more fabric and adding borders made quick work of my supposedly quick finish.

Quilt Back

So close.....so tomorrow I plan to quickly add the last two borders and the binding....whoops I said it again.

When it's all finished I'll give you the goods, on how this quilt came about, on Lynne's blog at Lily's Quilts

Deja Vu Wednesday

I was definitely having  a deja vu moment, as I tip toed down to my studio this afternoon. Toddler asleep....puppy asleep and I'm down here doing some nap time quilting. Wednesday is the day, I babysit my fifteen month old granddaughter and her new sheltie puppy. It brings back the days when I was home with my four little ones...nap times were sacred and often used for a little something creative.....

Look at what I accomplished........ I finally finished quilting all the squares for Lily's Quilts QAL.

Here are the backs. Now I just have to join them all together.

Joining Blocks for Lily's Quilts QAL

I thought I better try joining a few of my blocks for Lily's Quilts QAL.  I still have five blocks to quilt, but my curiosity always gets the best of me.

As you can see, I am using a wide joining strip
Here is the back of the three joined squares.

Making Progress...But Could Get Distracted

I'm making good progress on the blocks for Lily's Quilts QAL
Four blocks quilted and five to go.
I'm making progress but could be distracted quite easily. What could possibly distract me??

This little goodie, that arrived this week...my new ipad.

After literally hijacking my husband's ipad, during our sailing trip.....yes there were some raised eyebrows when I asked him if he had seen MY ipad....I talked him into buying me one, of my very own, for my birthday. It arrived this week, the newest version I might add. A better woman would have let him have newer model but, but I'm not that better woman.

Now let's see what this little wonder is capable of......Wow, I can blog from anywhere now.

So Graphic...I Can't get enough.

So many graphic lines and shapes all around us. As I came back through the Victoria Airport last night, I just had to snap a few more shots.

Waiting for my flight, my fingers were itching to quilt. It makes me want to create large, industrial looking work.

Back to quilting this morning.

Quilt Backs....Good Place to Experiment

I was planning to experiment with an over sized version, of the blocks, that I am making for Lily's Quilts QAL, and the quilt backs are just the place to do it.

Here's the same assembly line method.

I even like ironing assembly line style

Quilts backs are great place to add a little something interesting.

Why, Why, Must One Idea Always Lead to Another??

I find it's often in the doing that ideas start to flow. Is that a problem ??  Yes and no, I'm barely into one project and the floodgates open and ideas start to bombard me......the result,  many many and I mean many multiple projects.

This year has been particularly bad or good (depending on your perspective).....I think the problem increased when I started blogging, just before Christmas.   Hmm, is there some correlation??? The up side...I love when my creative juices are flowing.....the down side, I would really like to finish these projects and that could take a really long time.

The smart thing to do would be, to write these ideas down, as they come, but smart, was never my strong suite.

As I was working on this project......

I suddenly started thinking.....

Here is the back of the block...I like to press my seams open.

The Quilted Block

The back fabric was quilted along with the front.

Back to what I was thinking....what if I make the block much bigger???

I'll get back to you on that...to many ideas racing around my head....am I writing them down, you would think...but no.

Assembly Line Type Quilting

This assembly line type quilting moves along rather quickly.  I'm using a method from the book Crazy Shortcut Quilts.  If you are familiar with Karla Alexander's work, the  Stacking the Deck method is fairly similar, except you only make one cut....then sew and then the next cut....then sew, and on and on until your block is complete.

My husband's pool table gets a good work out, as I lay out all the blocks after each cut.

I'm happy to say I finished nine blocks (only six are shown) in pretty quick time, since I want to keep up with the QAL.

Lily's Quilts QAL

The next step is to play around and come up with a layout I like and works well, with the QAYG method, I want to use to join the blocks, after they are quilted.
