Colour Explosion

My design wall has gotten quite the work out today.

Since I'm easily distracted I left this morning's project in the dust and started on these reverse, applique, circles...something I've been wanting to do for quite awhile.

We're going back to Alberta on the weekend..... so I just had to play a little more, before putting the studio back in order.

Arnoldi Inspired 2011

Arnoldi Inspired 2011 by MariQuilts
Arnoldi Inspired 2011, a photo by MariQuilts on Flickr.

Here is a little better shot of my inspiration in the midst of my mess. I found an app to crop and fix photos on the ipad....all this playing around.....sooo addictive.

In the Midst of My Mess

Lately I have been very good at creating mess and still more mess.

But, in the midst of my mess, I did manage to find a little order.

And, in the midst of my mess, there usually lurks a little inspiration.

Inspired by the work of Chuck Arnoldi....lets see where this takes me, if I can get out from underneath all my piles of fabric and multiple projects.

Hopefully the quality of these pictures aren't to bad...still working from the ipad. My computer is definitely fried and I haven't quite figured out how to edit and crop photos on here yet.

Just a Little Test Run....for a Bigger idea

I've had this idea for a long time, I just haven't done to much about it. Now when I have many other things (I should be doing) and multiple projects on the go....I start to fool around with it. I just grabbed a few scraps and started playing.

I am liking the black thread...something I've not quilted very much with.
I used raw edge applique for the circles....something I won't be doing for the actual project. I think I will use inset seams instead....just a little more finished looking.

These test squares or almost mini quilts can be very valuable in making some of these decisions.

Help...Not Enough Room on the Design Wall

These blocks are multiplying like crazy. The trouble with working with these over sized blocks is there's just not enough room on the design wall.

These blocks come together really quickly....I have nineteen made. What next??? I'm not sure.

I'm using shot cottons by Kaffe Fassett....they are soft with a little give....perfect for curves. I decided to press these seams open, something I haven't done with curved seams before. I find it works really well.

The colours of these fabrics are amazing.

And still More Cirlcles...QAYG

As I go through my quilts, I'm rather surprised, at how many are QAYG. The circles on this quilt are inset rather than applique. The quilt is all flannels, except for the binding and the joining strips. In my earlier QAYG quilts, including this one, the lattice or joining strips are very obvious

I just can't seem to get enough of spirals....easy when you are quilting the individual blocks.

More QAYG ...and with Circles

By the time I made this quilt in 2007, I was beginning to be an old pro at joining the squares. I made this quilt for my beautiful niece, Alarissa's 16th she unwrapped it our eyes met, and she said in wonder "You made this for me?" I was a happy quilter then..... another one of my quilts was going to be loved. There I go...sappy again.

As my fascination with circles, started to grow, I was determined to conquer them. I have a few favourite methods for circles, as well.....I'll save that for another day

The squares for the quilt back are just random....I didn't bother planning to much....I like surprises.

Circle Quilt 2009

Circle Quilt 2009, originally uploaded by MariQuilts.
I woke up to the most incredible sunrise this morning. I ran to get my camera so I could photograph this quilt with the sunrise as the backdrop, but the battery was dead. Since I had taken the quilt off the wall I thought I may as well take another few shots of it once the battery was recharged. Later I realized I was so busy racing around I didn't get to enjoy the sunrise, that was my loss.
